Finished shooting my DVD yesterday, my house looked like a Hollywood movie-set all day. Going to see the first edited version today, I am so excited! Then lunch with my best friends and afternoon at Mars The Salon to do my manicure and pedicure.

My personal experience….

I actually watched this documentary while in Hawaii and I could finally understand my friend back in High School….. she  was a woman from the outside, but one day in the lockers I found out she had a penis, but she looked like a girl like me as well. She said she also had the genitals of a girl (actually she was menstruating). This was the reason why she had never kissed a boy… how could she face being in the situation of everyone knowing her difference, her secret? She told me that he parents did not want to discuss it and told her to keep quiet and that everything would be fine as nobody had to know…. so sad. It was our secret, and I kept it. I spoke to her since, and she has gone through surgery. She is now the mother of 2!

Also, one day I scooted a beautiful girl while shopping in Tokyo and asked her to enter the competition. This was end of 2002. She applied, past the audition, but later on she asked me if it was okay to have a penis because she knew she would have to be wearing a swimsuit and did not want to face rejection. I had no idea what to do….. I told her that I would support her if she was to stay and compete. But later on I believe she did not want to face the press, the rumors, the pressure of being different if it was to be revealed somehow. She decided to quit to protect her family… now I think it is a pity because she could have been a role model and a spokesperson for many other women born with 2 sex in Japan. Do you know that each year many babies are born with 2 sex? We are mammals also it is quite understandable that some of us would be hermaphrodite. (In biology, a hermaphrodite is an animal or plant that has reproductive organs normally associated with both male and female sexes)

Someone around you has a secret, a family secret. He or she was born with both male and female genitals. He’s not handicapped nor is he mentally challenged. But he is faced with a continuing unresolved personal issue: should life go on this way?

The strain of not being able to share with others is unbearable, as the frustration of medical dead-ends leads to stress and the issue of being physically a man, but feeling like a woman (or vice versa) can become obsessive or even fatal.

Patrick Manon Patrick Verret, was born intersexed, was raised as a girl and is now living as a man. The sexual identity of a person is usually the first question one asks about a newborn: “Is it a boy or a girl?” To most parents the answer is a simple one. But what about the parents of a child born with both female and male genitals? It’s a reality no one dares to speak about, the so-called third sex. Most people are unaware that this situation exists, and institutions are not designed to recognize a sex outside male and female. The majority of parents of intersexed children still choose surgery to avoid social stigmatism, but many intersexuals are critical of the choices made for them when they were infants. While Dr. Nihoul Fekete thinks parents should determine the sex of their child at birth and that surgery should be performed right away, Vincent Guillot (Paris), the founder of Organization Intersex International, calls the surgery he had as a child a “mutilation”. He describes himself as neither male nor female.

The Third Sex explores the plight of several intersexuals and their families in Canada, France and Thailand. Arthur (Paris) and Patrick (Montreal) were both raised as girls, but in adulthood have decided, with the help of surgery, to live as men. Thai boxer Nong Tum is in the process of becoming a woman while continuing to practice her sport. And the mother of an Ontario boy born with an extra chromosome describes the dilemmas she faces as a parent. There is genuine concern that a child would face devastating public humiliation if their unusual secret is revealed. Patrick Verret Patrick Verret as a man.

In Toronto, some families receive support from Barbara Neilson, a social worker who specializes in the care of intersexed children at Toronto’s Hospital for Sick Children. She understands first-hand, not only the fear and shame of parents from every ethnic community, but also the reality of children face living with a DSD (disorder of sexual development). But more and more, adult intersexuals want to speak out about their situation. Sometimes publicly, but usually through the internet, they’re sharing stories, asserting their unique gender identity, and are often denouncing the mutilation that many say they’ve suffered at the hands of modern medicine.

The world of sport has long been faced with controversy about the gender of some athletes. It became an issue at the Olympic Games in the 1930s when people openly questioned the actual gender of some women athletes. Dr. Patrick Schamasch, the International Olympic Committee’s Medical and Scientific Director, outlines the IOC’s changing approach to gender verification since the 1960s. As they better understood the complexity and difficulty of gender verification they were forced to adopt new rules for competition. Each month we get together with my 3 French friends, Pablo, Dominique and Francois for diner. It is always literally very entertaining with lots of laughing for sure. This time, after diner, Dominique invited us to have desert at his home and to watch the soccer game France against South Africa.

As expected France lost… actually we were not surprised as they refused to practice most of the time before heading to Johannesburg…. a national shame, unbelievable! But with lots of champagne we still were laughing until the end. I shot for my DVDs next morning, hair & Make-up at 9 am, it was something! But I always work better when I have short nights. Of course I paid for it the next consecutive days…. but it is not everyday that France plays at the World Cup… desune!?

Brooke Greenberg (born January 8, 1993), is a 17 year old girl from Reisterstown, Maryland, who has remained physically and cognitively similar to a toddler, despite her increasing age. She is about 30 inches (76 cm) tall, weighs about 16 pounds (7.3 kg), and has an estimated mental age of 9 months to 1 year. Brooke’s doctors have termed her condition Syndrome X.


Brooke was born on January 8, 1993 at Sinai Hospital in Baltimore, Maryland, one month prior to her due date, weighing just four pounds (1.8 kg). She was born with anterior hip dislocation, a condition which caused her legs to be swiveled upwards, awkwardly, toward her shoulders; this was corrected surgically. Otherwise, Brooke appeared to be a normal infant.

In her first six years, Brooke Greenberg went through a series of unexplained medical emergencies from which she recovered. She had seven perforated stomach ulcers. She also suffered a seizure. This was followed by what was later diagnosed as a stroke; weeks later, no damage was detected. At age five, Brooke had a mass in her brain that caused her to sleep for 14 days. The doctors diagnosed the mass as a brain tumor. However, Brooke later awoke, and physicians found no tumor present. Brooke’s pediatrician, Dr. Lawrence Pakula, states that the source of her sudden illness remains a mystery.


Over the past several years, the Greenbergs visited many specialists, looking for an explanation for their daughter’s strange condition, and found she has a mutation in Chromosome 1. In 2001, when Dateline documented Brooke, she was still the size of a six-month-old infant, weighing just 13 lb (5.9 kg) at 27 inches (69 cm) tall. The family still had no explanation. Brooke Greenberg’s mother Melanie said: “They [the specialists] just said she’ll catch up. Then we went to the nutritionist, the endocrinologist. We tried the growth hormone…”. The growth hormone treatment had no effect. Howard, Brooke’s father, said: “I mean she did not put on an ounce or she did not grow an inch … That’s when I knew there was a problem.” After the growth hormone administration failed, the doctors, unable to diagnose a known condition, named her condition Syndrome X.


The Greenbergs made many visits to nearby Johns Hopkins Children’s Center, and even took Brooke to New York’s Mount Sinai Hospital, searching for information about their daughter’s condition. When geneticists sequenced Greenberg’s DNA, they found that the genes associated with the premature aging diseases were normal, unlike the mutated versions in patients with Werner syndrome and progeria.


In 2006, Dr. Richard Walker of the University of South Florida College of Medicine, said that Brooke’s body is not developing as a coordinated unit, but as independent parts that are out of sync. She has never been diagnosed with any known genetic disorder or chromosomal abnormality that would help explain why.


In 2009, Walker said: “There’ve been very minimal changes in Brooke’s brain … Various parts of her body, rather than all being at the same stage, seem to be disconnected.” Walker noted that Greenberg’s brain, for example, is not much more mature than that of a newborn infant. He estimates her mental age at around 9 months to a year old. Brooke can make gestures and recognize sounds, but cannot speak. Her bones are like those of a ten-year-old, and she still has her baby teeth, which have an estimated developmental age of about 8 years. Said Walker, “We think that Brooke’s condition presents us with a unique opportunity to understand the process of aging.”


Her telomeres seem to be shortening at the normal rate.
