some feedback from the rehearsals

July10,2008
All the delegates were filming for the opening number in their National Costume. Japan and Korea were right on the front… this is bad news maybe it means that they will not be in the finals? I hope not! Riyo practiced her final speech. This year it will be the first time that a Miss Universe will be dancing on stage during the opening number. Sun will be on the first row, same as Riyo last year. In general they always put the girls who have the best presence and can dance best on the front. In 2003 Amelia Vega was front and Riyo Mori as well last year. Hiroko will be in the back, I am not surprised because she cannot really dance well…. The girls that impressed me today are Czech Republic, Serbia, Russia, Nicragua, Ukraine, Netherlands and Turkey. I am now in the lobby at the delegate’s hotel, and we are all waiting for the delegates to come. We have an hour sharp to share with them tonight again. Gossip of the day: Miss Egypt is a real pain in the neck; she slapped Riyo backstage when by mistake she stepped on her dress. Then she was horrified when she realized she just had slapped Miss Universe! LOL She was saying –“I am sorry I did not know that it was you!!”… Riyo told her: “it is okay, but you should not do that anyway to anyone, this is not really nice”. She was mortified. Also she shares the room with is Canada and she smokes cigarettes after cigarettes and Miss Canada asked her kindly to pls go outside when she wishes to smoke. She turned around and said: “why? This is MY room?!” Nice girl indeed! Sometimes I wonder why this kind of girl bothers to come here…. Hiroko and Sun adore their respective roommates, they were lucky with Miss Ireland and El Salvador because they are the sweetest girls. I was seated with the directors of Angola, Antigua and Barbados, Ed of Global Beauties, Osmel Souza and Miss Dominican Republic’ mom at the rehearsals. The delegates started today at 5 am! And they rehearsed all day I will write later because Luciano, my good friend whom is the Director of Miss Italy just arrived and I can spot him across the hallway. I want to welcome here. Talk to you after I see the delegates.

OH MY GOD! Miss Egypt slapped RIYO!?
Such a girl having very very bad manners should not join the competition.

Anyway, hope Riyo is OK and she will focus on her performance.

    I love Riyo!!!
Can’t wait to see her performance on the stage!!!

  2. Missy Says:

hey ines was wondering what you think of miss albania

  3. eriko Says:

    Hi,Ines
I am surprised at Miss Egypt’s attitude!!I think she shouldn’t have been Miss Egypt!!In my school, there are girls like Egypt. She is the same my schoolmates!!I can’t believe it!!

Hirokosan and Sun are so cool!!Their dynamic attitudes are the best!!So they can be able to be fainalists!!I believe it!!I always hope they will be fainals!!I can’t imagine they will not be fainals!!

    GANBATTE Hirokosan, Sun and Ines!!!!

  4. kenda Says:

wow … the story about miss Egypt is really something … there’s no way all the 80 girls r nice and sweet but at least they know how to be in a competition … this girl … i don’t know … she come here just to wait 4 her plan to come back or what???

  5. Alfred Says:

Love your blog, but if I am not mistaken Deborah Carthy Deu also danced in the opening number the year she passed on the title.

  6. Marie Says:

“This year it will be the first time that a Miss Universe will be dancing on stage during the opening number.”

Exiting MUs before the Trump Era used to do that. I can recall Miss Universes 1985-1986 dancing on the opening number with the candidates.

  7. ann Says:

ines, thanks for the updates! i love your site and your honesty, modesty, and willingness to share your thoughts are awesome. keep em’ coming!!

  8. La Mas Bella Says:

Ines I think you are a little bit confused. This will not be the first time a current Miss Universe will take center stage with the delegates in the opening number. Before her there were two that did it, Deborah Carthy Deu from Puerto Rico, Miss Universe 1985 and Barbara Palacios from Venezuela, Miss Universe 1986.

  9. Gem Says:

Ines, I’m wondering why it is bad news to be placed in the front for the filming of the National Costume segment? I would be so disappointed if Hiroko and Sun didn’t make it to the finals because the girls have put in so much hard work into this.

However, for now, I will simply believe in the power of positive thinking. :)

Hiroko and Sun, you are both formidable women. Asia should be so proud to have you represent our beauty!

  10. David I. Says:

Hahaha Oh Ines, gotta love you, really, I think YOU are the main reason why the Miss Universe is turning more interesting ;)

Thank you for all these update, you are fabulous!

  11. Ivan Says:

Well im excited on your impressions from Czech, Nicaragua & Turkey i like them so tell me what you think Ines!!

& about Egypt ikd why but i can picture her smoking her lungs out in front of Canada thats disturbing she really seems rude

  12. James Says:

Hi Ines, You must be referring to the country “Antigua and Barbuda”, right? Barbados is another country, I’m sure that was an honest mistake, I know you are very busy with your schdules but still took time to update all of us….your fans! Any news from the lovely Miss Philippines, Miss Germany and Miss Autralia? They are my favorites for the crown, you know….Btw, I am not Filipino, just FYI!

  13. Gilbert Says:

Egypt interntionally slap people for stepping on her dress? What a bitch! Poor Riyo.

  14. darryl Says:

I am appalled at Egypt or any contestant that smokes like that when that should be good examples of health and fitness and more importantly examples to young women. Thailand and Italy are both pageants where there winner cannot smoke. I think when contestants project one image in public and another differently, that is where people critize pageants. From personal history working with the pageants, Egypt has always been a problem contestant. When I was designing for the pageant in 1996, Egypt would not even greet her National Director.

  15. darryl Says:

    Ines,

I would not worry about the placement of Hiroka and Sun in the opening number. A lot of former winners have been out front. I am hearing so many raves about Hiroko’s dress and Sun is merging more and more as a contestant to watch. I think this is definitely going be the year of Asia VS Latin America.

  16. Adam Says:

    Hello Ines!

Could you tell me what are your impressions about Misses Poland & Tanzania after the preliminaries? Thanks in advance.

    Best regards.

  17. Arch Says:

At least Riyo has a fair reaction, telling Egypt that it’s not nice to slap people just because of an accident. Great job handling the situation Riyo!

If that were me, I would not be able to keep my emotions back. I hope the MU organization does something about Miss Egypt and I hope the MU organization helps Riyo with this.

  18. surd Says:

    Namaste Ines.
Nice to read ur views and opinion abt the girls. As i hail 4m India,i would like to knw how do u find miss india and would you be interested in being part of Femina miss india competitations’ training program?

  19. Leesora Says:

LOL wow Riyo must be nice….I know for a fact. That wouldn’t of happened if it was me. What a lady. Please tell her that.

  20. Captain Moon Says:

THIS PISSES ME OFF!!! NO one lays their hands on Riyo! How dare she?!

  21. Andrew dv Says:

Ines, it’s a foul thing about Miss Egypt and what’s the reason why Miss Egypt slapped to Riyo’s face? Anyway, Miss Egypt was not in my list to become Miss Universe. Ines, I appreciate for your prediction of those countries for possible winning Miss Universe.

Let’s find out this Monday and I’m happy for Riyo’s farewell walk on the same day. I’m proud of you, Ines for giving a good effort to Riyo!

  22. Steve Says:

It sickens me when I hear of contestants who smoke – how ugly and vulgar!
As for the behaviour of slapping Riyo, that was disgusting. I think Riyo handled it very well.

  23. Chantal Says:

    Coucou Ines,

    bonne continuation !!!

  24. ME AND ONLY ME Says:

    HY INES,

I DONT THINK THE FACT THAT YOUR GIRLS ARE IN THE FORNT LINE IS BAD NEWS. WELL, AT LEAST FOR KOREA! SHE WILL GET FAR NOT TO THE TOP 3 OR THE CROWN BUT SHE WILL. SHE HAS SOME FIRE IN HER EYES, SOMETHING THAT CAUGHTS YOUR ATENTION.

JAPAN , I DONT THINK SHE WILL BE IN THE TOP 15. SHE JUST DONT HAVE IT. I REALLY LIKE THE WORK YOU HAVE DONE INES. YOU HAVE OPENED THE EYES OF MANY PEOPLE AND SHOW THEM THAT ASIAN GIRLS CAN BE CONSIDER BEAUTIFUL.

KURARA CHIBANA OPENED A DOOR FOR THE REST OF ASIANS TO STAND A CHANCE. I AM FROM PUERTO RICO AND SUPER PROUD WE HAVE 5 CROWNS, BUT I HAVE BEEN SUFFERING FROM PERMANENT HEART DAMAGE SINCE THE NIGHT KURARA LOST. SHE WAS THE PERFECT MISS UNIVERSE WAY FAR MORE TAN RIYO.

I THINK THAT IT WAS AN UNJUSTIFIABLE CRIME. WISH SHE COULD PARTICIPATE AGAIN AND RECLAIM HER CROWN. THIS YEAR JAPAN SHE IS JUST A CUTE TEENAGE-GIRL, BUT SHE JUST NOT EXUDE WHAT IT TAKES TO BE EVEN CONSIDER TO BE THERE. NOT EVEN GOD’S POWER WILL MAKE HER A TOP 15.

  25. jase Says:

    Hi Ines

    Hope you are well!

This post is just sooooo funny hilarious !!! I luvvvvv it! The glitters, the glamour and the gossips behind the Miss Universe!!! I will definitely spread this gossip! Ha,ha,ha,ha !!!

    More please!

    Take care,
    Ciao

  26. Masami Says:

i have really disapoitting hear about yr comment for Hiroko.Even she cannot dance well, you should teach her before she gets vietnam.i think you focus yr own cariier(interview,yr book, magazine),and yr riyo.pls should take resposibillity and focus for Hiroko because you choose her.i’m yr big fan and wish yr luck as JAPANESE NATIONAL DIRECTOR.i don’t hear yr excuse for muj win for Hiroko.ofcorse Hiroko and Riyo has big differnce. But Hiroko are still challenging for win,pls help her.

  27. DK Says:

Haha, Ms. Ines. You rock. We would never hear of such drama going on backstage if it weren’t for you… haha ^^

The story about Ms. Egypt was hilarious, although I feel really bad for Riyo for having to endure such a temper tantrum. What in the world. Miss Universe or the garbageman, NOBODY should be slapped for stepping on a dress, seriously now. >___

  28. Darren Says:

    Hi Ines
Your site is the best blog. There will always be some terrible contestants but win or lose, semi-finalist or not, Hiroka has represented herself well and that is a great reflection on you. Only one girl can be Miss Universe but many can emerge from this contest as “true winners” and I believe that is both Hiroko and Sun. Well Done!

  29. Frenchy Says:

Ines, Riyo is not the first miss universe that dance in the beginning of the peagent in the 1986 Debora carty Deau dance with the candidates of miss universe!!! she dance with Scott Grossman.!!!!

  30. Megumi Says:

    Hi,Ines-san,

Wow! can we see a Riyo-san’s beautiful performance, too?
I’m looking forward to seeing Riyo-san’s speech, and her gorgeous dancing!! Thank you!!!

    from Japan

  31. Captain Moon Says:

    to masami:

maybe you should join MUJ next year? I’m sure you’d do well since you’d go through all the dedication to be the best.

  32. yyk Says:

lmao! miss egypt BETTER BE mortified. Riyo certainly handled the situation perfectly…as ANY educated and deciplined person should do (if egypt got slapped in the face she’ll prob slap back by instinct lol). I feel soo so bad for miss Canada, must suck to have all her belongings smelling like cigs(yuck!!), hope she brought febreeze…

so glad Sun has recovered! i hope hiroko will continue to be powerful always, she’s so unique and with ur support ines, i think she has potential to go pretty far with Sun.

Thank you for the gossip! hope to hear more of it!
Miss Egypt, if u are reading this, everybody knows what u did ok. so for gods sake smartin up and start acting like a grown up woman…u are competing for miss universe…not to become a highschool prom queen…jeez

  33. yanina Says:

    what a funny post!!

nice work on the gossips…at least we get to see what happens behind closed doors :)

if i were that girl..I would slap that bitch back! hehe kidding!

  34. kenda Says:

btw … i adore sun’s jimmy choo bag … it’s so so adorable :( ( and i dying to know where i can find another 1 like this … pls pls ines …

  35. kenda Says:

oops … mistake … the green diesel bad actually

  36. hye Says:

I want to hear good news of SUN and HIROKO.
I’d like to believe…SUN and HIROKO will enter TOP15… I’ll cheer her on in the Miss Universe competition. How about your opinion?

    Please…Please…

I hope to your update now…

    I Love you Ines.

  37. Jess Says:

Being in the front for taping of the Opening Number is BAD? Why? Did other girls in past competitions who were in the front not make it to final 15? If so, I guess it could be a bad news… :( But I don’t want to think it… I’m going to stay positive and hope for the best for these two lovely gurls!!! GO SUN! GO HIROKO!

  38. Jess Says:

And regarding Miss Egypt… What a BIT*H!!! If I was in Riyo’s spot (and was not MU), I would have bit*h slapped her back and be like “oh hell no, u just did not touch me!!!” :)

  39. Jess Says:

Riyo is cool! Egypt is WTF???

  40. meko Says:

Hi Kenda! Which country are u from? I think you can find the green bag in any diesel store :) I saw it in the shop and it looks really cool! Too big for me though…haha. I perfer the blue version. Cheers! :)

  41. kenda Says:

    salut meko
I’m from Vietnam T_T … sadly there’r no diesel store in my country
but i’ll go to France in 2 month 4 study … hope i’ll not sold out :( (

  42. meko Says:

  45. David Says:

Hey I just read Missosology.org and they said that Korea and Japan had good gowns but were bad in swimsuit and didn’t have good bodies hence will not make Top 15. I guess unfortunaately this confirms ur fears Ines. Also i hate Korea’s walk. She tries too hard and it shows, it doesn’t seem to flow well.

  46. nini Says:

How trashy that Egypt girl. Riyo, how mature. Love her!

Thank you Ines for all your inside scoop. Please tell us more.

Also what are your thoughts on Albania and Kosovo???

  47. Gabriel Says:

Missosology has no credibility whatsover. Have you looked at their last year’s predictions?

  48. Laura Says:

    To David

missology.com commits very bad predicition. Last year, Mori Riyo was excluded from missology.com’s prediction and even if Japan and Korea could not make it to top 15 it’s okay. They did their best and ,still, they are the most gorgeous girls in the Universe!

  49. LeeSora Says:

I doubt that…korea and Japan bad in swimsuits?? omg that doesnt even sound right. I doubt that missology.org is right. I know another site that believes dominican republic will take it all.

  50. Jess Says:

Funny, cuz I read in a lot people’s top 15 prediction list that Sun will make the cut because she is fierce and is the catwalk diva. Also, I would have to second what Gabriel said above… Missosology is not credible at all. A lot of candidates they predicted last year didn’t even make the cut…

  51. LeeSora Says:

yea last year they said italy was going to take it all!!

  52. beri Says:

that’s right LeeSora, that was Missossology’s prediction, and she didn’t even make the Top 15! Missossology’s lists are a waste of time!

  53. David Says:

I sort of agree with Missosologys predictions. Japan looks very shapeless in swimsuit. Korea is ok not amazing just ok but she’s short as well. and looks like a dwarf in comparision to the others. I think their swimsuit scores wud be very low but if they do well in interview then maybe with the combined scores they can make top 15. But again Donald trump cares less about interview and want women to look like supermodels. I think India and Thailand are the strongest from Asia and this is stated by Global Beauties as well. But this year a latina will win again

  54. Jess Says:

You have your own opinion and I respect that… But calling someone shapeless/dwarf is not really nice… That’s all I got to say. And I think interview counts a good portion of the overall outcome cuz Brazil and Korea had the highest combined scores before the interviews, but they did not become MU cuz I’m assuming their interview scores weren’t as high as Japan’s. I still don’t agree that Missosology makes good predictions.

  55. Jess Says:

BTW who does Missosology predict will be the eventual winner? Let’s see if they predicted correctly this year…

  56. Jess Says:

    come this sunday I mean…

  57. LeeSora Says:

    To David..
yes globalbeauties predicted that Thailand and India is the strongest from Asia..However, India did not fill out her swimming suit…she has no hips…Japan and Korea looks better in swimsuit than her..they both actually look better in swimsuits in some of the favorites i.e kosovo and the U.S..I don’t think they look like a dwarf compare to the other contestants…I believe USA is as tall as Japan..but she is going to make it to the top 15..most because she is from the USA…and last year riyo wasn’t as tall as some latina contestants.

  58. Sean Says:

obviously MUO doesn’t have an issue about the height. see some Miss USA winners.

  59. Stephen Says:

Missosology wasn’t able to predict the winner of Miss Universe last year. Missosology people were able to predict the winners in 2005 and 2006, but their predicted winners in 2003, 2004 and 2007 did not even penetrate the semifinals! So you do the maths! Also, they did not even put Miss Japan in their last year’s Top 15 Prediction! But, it’s really fun reading their analysis year after year! There is nothing wrong with predictions, but I hope some of you will stick to your own choices without being influenced by the opinion of various pageant websites.
Lastly, I don’t really care about Globalbeauties! It is the least credible pageant website in the world! I stopped visiting that site years ago! If the Miss Universe pageant became so predictable, then it ends up being forgettable and boring! On the contrary, several surprises could make it really interesting!

  61. Perfect Diamond/ Perfect Pearl Says:

I think it is unfair for the deserving winner to be forced to wear the long gown since winning Miss Universe is a personal choice of each of the delagates and it is their own game and they should be given the right to wear whatever they want coz it’s a life changing contest and it’s their own game to play.
How to make a delagate lose? Hire the pageant director to give the wrong gown sponsors to a delagate so that she will lose on purpose! These syndicate are targetting potential winners and Araneta is easily corrupted!

  62. Perfect Diamond/ Perfect Pearl Says:

Losers should sue their directors for the wrong choices…

  63. juliet pangan Says:

Miss Egypt slapped RIYO MORI?SHE SHOULD SLAPPED HER BACK???????????!!!!!!!!!!!

  64. juliet pangan Says:

Hi Ines. How are you?Missedthe ninnies sooooooo much.
    how are they??????????

  65. erlo Says:

I just read the comments above and now that Miss Universe 2008 is over, it is time to assess the two top websites on beauty pageants. Number 1 website Globalbeauties predicted that Colombia will win with Panama as first runner-up. Number two website Missosology.Org predicted Venezuela will win and Colombia as first runner-up.

    That’s all folks.
